CKHHI Mission Statement

The mission of the Central Kentucky Housing and Homeless Initiative is to mobilize the nonprofit, public, faith-based and private sectors in our communities in an effort to end homelessness and ameliorate housing insecurity.

History

The Central Kentucky Housing and Homeless Initiative (CKHHI) officially launched on March 3, 2003. With administrative assistance from LexLinc’s Provider Cabinet (a community collaborative first created in 1998 to address issues associated with welfare reform), CKHHI has managed the HUD Continuum of Care planning process in Lexington Fayette County since the submission of the 2003 CoC. The organization has been incorporated under the Commonwealth of Kentucky and is a non-profit organization under section 501(c)(3) of the IRS code of the federal government.

The stated mission of CKHHI is “to mobilize the nonprofit, public, faith-based and private sectors in our communities in an effort to end homelessness and ameliorate housing insecurity.” In carrying out this mission CKHHI has worked extensively with other entities in the state devoted to similar efforts. For example, CKHHI hosted a regional meeting for the Kentucky Interagency Council on Homelessness (KICH) in the formation of Kentucky’s plan for ending chronic homelessness. Lexington-Fayette has a seat on this 23-member body that serves as the primary policy entity of the Kentucky CoC. KICH meets monthly to coordinate state-wide systems and policies that forge partnerships among state agencies in order to eliminate homelessness.

In addition, CKHHI members participate actively in the development of sections on housing and homeless services in the on-going production of the LFUCG Consolidated Plan. At public hearings, homeless providers and other advocates focus on the best uses of ESG, HOME, CDBG and HOPWA dollars to assist the homeless (or persons at high risk of homelessness) as well as develop ideas to expand funding targeted for homeless services.

The increasing involvement of CKHHI in local, regional and statewide homeless activities has increased our acceptance throughout the state as the leading entity in central Kentucky on homeless issues. CKHHI is currently working in collaboration with the Community Development Department of LFUCG to develop a “Ten-Year Plan to End Homelessness in Lexington-Fayette County”. Plans call for a draft report to be completed and submitted to City Council by April 2007.
